Where does your ship dock?
Panama has two cruise ports. Colon on the Atlantic side (most Caribbean itineraries stop here) and Fuerte Amador on the Pacific (more common on Pacific or transit cruises). The excursion choices depend on where you land.
From Colon (Atlantic side)
- Agua Clara Locks + Gatun Lake: 5-6 hours. See the 2016 expanded locks with Neopanamax ships, then a boat ride on Gatun Lake to spot monkeys and sloths. $90-130.
- Portobelo + San Lorenzo: 6-7 hours. Two UNESCO colonial fortresses on opposite sides of the canal entrance. $100-140.
- Embera Village: 7-8 hours. Dugout canoe ride up the Chagres River to an indigenous Embera community. $130-180.
From Fuerte Amador (Pacific side)
- Miraflores + Casco Viejo: 5-6 hours. The two classic Panama City sights in a single tour. $70-100.
- Partial Canal Transit: 6-7 hours. Only feasible if port stay is 10+ hours. See two sets of locks from inside a ship. $195-240.
- Soberania National Park: 6-7 hours. Rainforest birding, aerial tram, and Gatun Lake monkey tour. Best for nature lovers. $110-160.
Tips for shore excursions
Book ahead. Small-group tours sell out fast on busy port days. Confirm the return-to-ship guarantee in writing. Take USD cash for tips (10 percent is standard). Check the weather before leaving the ship: May to November is rainy season in Panama and Atlantic side rain can delay road transfers.
Frequently asked questions
Cruise ships use two ports: Colon (Colon 2000, Pier 6) on the Atlantic side, and Fuerte Amador on the Pacific, roughly 20 minutes from Panama City downtown.
From Colon, the signature excursion is Agua Clara Locks (part of the 2016 canal expansion) followed by a boat ride on Gatun Lake to see capuchin monkeys. The Portobelo UNESCO fort pairs well if you have extra time.
From Fuerte Amador, you can combine Miraflores Locks, a walking tour of Casco Viejo, and a visit to the Biomuseo. A partial Canal transit is also possible if your port call is at least 10 hours.
Independent small-group tours are cheaper and more flexible. Reputable local operators offer a guaranteed return to the ship on time. Always book ahead and read the cancellation policy.
